On December 17, 2018, the HUFS Alumni Association invited HUFS alumni-ambassadors and held the HUFS Alumni-Ambassadors Conference and Year-End Gathering 2018. The envoys were visiting Korea for the annual gathering of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA).
The event was emceed by Kang Young-eun, director of Cultural Affairs of the HUFS Alumni Association (Dept. of French Language, class of 1982/MBC Media Business Unit, head of Cultural Project Production Center). In his welcome speech, Min Dong-seok, president of the HUFS Alumni Association (Dept. of Russian, class of 1973, former vice minister of Foreign Affair) said that the storied HUFS Alumni Association of MOFA is a great institution today because of the dedication and efforts of former presidents of HUFS, alumni of MOFA, and senior diplomats and their affection for their alma mater, and he expressed expectation that the HUFS Alumni Association, HUFS Alumni Association of MOFA, and HUFS would join hands for continued growth.
In his congratulatory message, President Kim In-chul said that he is proud of and thankful to HUFS alumni serving at the MOFA for the national interest and promised that HUFS will to its best to make the alumni proud of their alma mater. Then, in his reply message, Kim Yong-gil, president of the HUFS Alumni Association of MOFA (Dept. of Political Science and Diplomacy, class of 1985/director of Northeast Asia Bureau) thanked the HUFS Alumni Association and HUFS for hosting the event and pledged that the HUFS Alumni Association of MOFA would also strive in many ways for the development of the HUFS Alumni Association and HUFS.
During the dinner, a number of suggestions were made for the development of HUFS, the HUFS Alumni Association, and the MOFA, and the participants shared their hopes that they would all work and thrive together. Kim Hyung-jin, chairman of Sejong Telecom (G-CEO, class of 1997), received an especially rousing applause when he declared a contribution of KRW 100 million to the HUFS Development Fund and KRW 40 million to the HUFS Alumni Association Scholarship Fund.
The event was attended by some 30 former and current envoys and HUFS alumni at the MOFA, including incumbent ambassadors such as Ambassador to Chile Jeong In-kyun (Dept. of Spanish, class of 1978), Ambassador to Switzerland Kwon Hae-ryong (Dept. of German, class of 1980), Ambassador to Brazil Kim Chan-woo (Dept. of English Linguistics, class of 1980), Ambassador to Spain Jeon Hong-jo (Dept. of English Linguistics, class of 1980), Ambassador to Panama Choo Won-hoon (Dept. of Spanish, class of 1982), Consul General at Saint Petersburg Kwon Dong-seok (Dept. of Russian, class of 1983), Ambassador to Ireland Yeo Woon-ki (Dept. of German, class of 1985), and former ambassadors such as former Ambassador to Indonesia Yoon Hae-joong (Dept. of Political Science and Diplomacy, class of 1964), former Ambassador to Uruguay Kim Jae-beom (Dept. of Spanish, class of 1969), former Ambassador to New Zealand Park Yong-kyu (Dept. of Political Science and Diplomacy, class of 1974), former Ambassador to Spain Sohn Seong-hwan (Dept. of French, class of 1974); and officials from the HUFS Alumni Association and HUFS and key alumni, including HUFS Alumni Association President Min Dong-seok, HUFS President Kim In-chul, Honorary Consul General of Croatia to Korea Yang In-mo (Dept. of German, class of 1959) and Sejong Telecom Chairman Kim Hyung-jin (G-CEO 97).
