■ The 10th Matthew D. Lee & Katherine H. Lee Scholarship Award Ceremony Held
On April 17, 2019, HUFS held the 10th Matthew D. Lee & Katherine H. Lee Scholarship Awards Ceremony. Matthew D. Lee(class of 1958, Department of German, Chairman of Allied Technology Group Inc.), President of Overseas HUFS Alumni Association has donated KRW 2.25 billion to HUFS under the Matthew D. Lee & Katherine H. Lee Scholarship Program. This year, the Matthew D. Lee & Katherine H. Lee Scholarship marks its 10th anniversary, having provided scholarship funds of over KRW 300 million to 67 HUFS students so far.
At the ceremony, HUFS President Kim In-chul expressed his profound appreciation for the generous scholarships and support from Matthew D. Lee, Chairman of Allied Technology Group. He also urged the recipients to take Chairman Lee as their role model and become leaders who serve society and practice sharing. Chairman Lee participated in the ceremony and, in his remarks, expressed his gratitude to HUFS for arranging the ceremony. He also encouraged the recipients to grow into a cadre of global talent and someday, start their own scholarship program for HUFS.
Kwon Sun-han, Chairman of So-E Trading Inc., in his congratulatory remarks, said, “It is a great honor to be part of this meaningful event.” He went on to note, “It is no simple matter to make such a generous endowment. Chairman Lee’s generosity in supporting a significant number of students every year will go down in HUFS’ history.”
■ HUFS Names Lecture Room After Alumnus Donor Chang In-tak
HUFS held a ceremony on June 4, 2019, to name a lecture room after an alumnus donor. During the ceremony, it named a lecture room in recognition of alumnus Chang In-tak. Mr. Chang enrolled in the Department of Spanish in 1976 and currently serves as the CEO & President of J&J Co., Ltd. He has donated a total of around KRW 100 million to HUFS as a contribution to the school’s scholarship programs and the HUFS development fund. HUFS designated a lecture room the Chang In-tak Lecture Room in honor of his generous contributions. Mr. and Mrs. Chang, who had flown from the Dominican Republic to attend the ceremony were not able to conceal their joy as they were received with an enthusiastic welcome from the students of the Department of Spanish.
The ceremony was emceed by Dean of the Office of External Development Lee Jae-won. During the ceremony, the dean stated in his remarks, “I extend my warmest welcome to Mr. Chang In-tak, who is visiting HUFS for the first time in 37 years." He went on to say, "It is such a great honor to host Mr. Chang widely regarded as the ‘Ramen King’ in the Dominican Republic. He has exported a wide range of Korean foods and beverages to the Dominican Republic and is leading the Korean Wave in Latin America. I am grateful for his strong dedication to and support for HUFS."
In response, Mr. Chang noted, “I settled down in Brazil after I graduated from HUFS in 1983, and this is my first visit to HUFS in 37 years. As I stand here, I realize time has indeed passed.” Expressing his gratitude, he added, “I am filled with joy to meet my former teachers, Professor Emeritus Yoon Seok-young, and Professor Emeritus Kang Seok-young. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to HUFS for arranging such a meaningful event.
Sharing a word of encouragement with the students of the Department of Spanish, he said, “When I first went to Dominica, I was faced with a lot of challenges. However, I spent time with the people and developed affection toward the nation, and I fell in love with the country as well as the people.” Citing this as the secret behind his success, he went on to say, “I would like to ask you all to dedicate yourself to whatever you do and grow into global talents.”
Mr. Chang graduated from HUFS in 1983 and moved to the Dominican Republic and established J&J CO., Ltd., a leading Korean trading company in Dominica. The company's key export items are Korean foods and beverages, including dried seaweed and condiments. With the launch of its ramen brand, ‘Choice,' the company has earned a reputation as an innovator which started and spread the so-called ‘ramen culture of Korea’ in Dominica where the hot dish had not been part of the culinary tradition.
■ Department of Spanish Held a Scholarship Award Ceremony and an Invited Lecture by President Lee Sang-wook of the Alumni Association
HUFS Department of Spanish held a scholarship award ceremony and an invested lecture by President Lee Sang-wook(class of 1975, the Department of Spanish) of the HUFS Alumni Association at the Seoul Campus BRICs International Forum Hall on May 2, 2019.
Department Head Kim Kyeong-hee who emceed the event noted that, “the Department of Spanish has seven scholarship programs(HUFS Alumni Association, Development Fund, PRODIOSA, Park Chul, Lee Seok-ju, Jihaksa, and Class of 1981 Kim Sun-mo · Oh Sang-hun).” She added, “A total of KRW 25 million was offered in scholarships for 18 HUFS students. I will remain eternally grateful to alumni who have made a generous contribution to the education of HUFS students.” She concluded her congratulatory remarks by stating, “I hope that the recipients of the scholarship will stand here as donor alumni someday.”
President Lee Sang-wook of the Alumni Association(CEO & President of Hwa-In Stone Inc.) said, “Spanish is a very useful language. When I was in Europe on a business trip, I had a range of completely new experiences because I speak Spanish.” He went on to say, “If they are well prepared, students will be able to transition successfully into society. I love to travel and that’s how I’ve come to see the world and gain new experiences. Those experiences will turn into a great asset and serve you well in running your own business. I would like advise students to experience many things while they are young.”
Director Jang Hye-jin(class of 1992, the Department of Spanish) who attended the ceremony on behalf of PRODIOSA shared words of encouragement, saying, “Female students who undertake new challenges and make concerted efforts will seize great opportunities to advance into society.”
■ HUFS Names Lecture Room after Alumnus Donor Park Byeong-sik
HUFS held a ceremony on May 1, 2019, to name a lecture room after an alumnus donor. Mr. Park enrolled in the Department of Portuguese in 1967 and currently serves as the Chairman of Bradcal Inc. He has donated a total of around KRW 100 million to HUFS to be used for a scholarship program and the HUFS development fund. HUFS designated Lecture Room No. 203 of the Institute of Teaching and Learning Development Building the Park Byeong-sik Lecture Room in honor of his generous contributions.
The ceremony was emceed by Dean of the Office of External Development Lee Jae-won. During the ceremony, the dean stated in his remarks, “HUFS is witnessing the advent of a renaissance of the Department of Portuguese. The glorious tradition of the department, signified by Vice Chairman Kwon Oh-gap of Hyundai Heavy Industries Holdings, being a recipient of a HUFS Award celebrating HUFS’ 65th anniversary continues with Chairman Park’s contribution of KRW 100 million.”
During the ceremony, HUFS President Kim In-chul stated, “I am very pleased to celebrate the occasion with the Department of Portuguese, a department with a strong student-graduate relationship.” He went on to say, “I am grateful for Chairman Park’s strong dedication to our institution, and I am truly honored to host Chairman Park and name a lecture room after him.” In response, Chairman Park said, “It’s been a while since I moved to the U.S., and paid my last visit to HUFS. I hope that my contributions will assist you in your endeavors to pursue academic excellence and other aspirations, just as HUFS has successfully promoted academic prominence.”
Mr. Jeon graduated from HUFS in 1972 with a degree in Portuguese, moved to the U.S. and established Bradcal Inc. in 1979 starting with innerwear exports. With nearly 40 years’ experience in airline catering services, airline duty-free, and apparel businesses, he has built Bradcal Inc. into a robust international business.
■ The 59th April 19 Revolution Commemoration Ceremony and Scholarship Award Ceremony Held
The 59th April 19 Revolution Commemoration Ceremony and Scholarship Award Ceremony were held on April 19, 2019. Members of HUFS’ Union for the April 19 Revolution gathered to commemorate the 59th anniversary of the historic revolution and to pay their respects to the brave individuals who sacrificed themselves for the sake of democracy. In attendance was Chairman Ryu Je-bong of the HUFS’ Union for the April 19 Revolution(class of 1957, Department of English), alumni Kim Su-hyung, Shin Gwang-chul, Huh Cheol-bu, Lee Ki-hu, and Hong Yung-gi. A scholarship award ceremony followed the ceremony.
In the ceremony, Dean Kim Su-wan of Global Student Affairs and Human Resource Development said in his remarks, “HUFS has become what it is today thanks to those who gave their lives for the cause of democracy, inspiring unlimited human development and contributing to the nation’s development.” Chairman Ryu of the HUFS’ Union for the April 19 Revolution stressed, “We shall remember the fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives for democracy and the noble spirit of the April 19 Revolution.”
The scholarship was granted to two students who have demonstrated a proper understanding of the April 19 spirit, and outstanding academic achievement. Lee Hae-ju(class of 2016, Department of Spanish), and Lee Seong-yeon(class of 2018, Department of Statistics) received the scholarship.
