■ Institute of EU Studies Hosts Academic Conference with Jeollabuk-do Province
HUFS Institute of EU Studies (Director Kim Bong-chul) hosted an online international academic conference with Jeollabuk-do Province and other academic institutes from Dec. 17 to Dec. 18, 2020.

The Institute of EU Studies played a main role in the conference with participation from the HK+ Project Team of the Institute of Indian Studies, the Emerging Economies Research Project Team of the Institute of Central Asia Studies, the Polar Research Center, and HUFS- Camões Portuguese Center. In addition, the European Centre for International Political Economy (ECIPE, Belgium), the Korean Society of Contemporary European Studies, and the Korean Association of Thai Studies participated in the conference to seek solutions for international cooperation for local governments during the COVID-19 era.

■ Center for International Area Studies Research HK+ Project Team Hosts Academic Conference
HUFS Center for International Area Studies Research HK+ Project Team (Director Kang Jun-yeong) hosted an HK+ United Academic Conference at the Aekyung Hall of the Graduate School of International and Area Studies in Dec. 2020.

Seoul National University Asia Center, Chungang University Foreign Studies Institute, Chungang University Institute for Historical Studies, HUFS Center for International Area Studies, and HUFS Institute of Russian Studies co-hosted the conference. The topic of the conference was “Recognizing Cultural Contact in Asia and the Northern Region: Where and how do we meet?” which was held despite the difficult situation brought upon by COVID-19 to encourage joint research opportunities and the sharing of research results, thereby bringing a synergy effect for research.

■ Language Research Institute Hosts 2020 Online Academic Conference
HUFS Language Research Institute (Director Kim Jong-ho) cohosted the 2020 Second Half Online Academic Conference with HK Semiosis Research Center at the lecture halls and seminar rooms of the Faculty Office Building of the Seoul Campus in Nov. 2020.

At the conference, a presentation on “Linguistic Stimulation, Awareness, and Frame” and various other topics were given. KAIST Prof. Choi Ki-sun and Korea University Research Prof. Lee Eun-yung gave keynote lectures, and 3 department presentations, 7 general presentations, and 3 special department presentations, including “Media Language and Sign Language,” were given.

■ Institute of Latin American Studies HK+ Project Team Holds Special Seminar
HUFS Institute of Latin American Studies HK+ Project Team (Director Jun Yong-gab) invited National Autonomous University of Mexico Prof. Guadalupe Valencia García for an overseas scholar special seminar at the Main Conference Room of the Main Building in Nov. 2020.

Director Jun moderated the seminar and Prof. Valencia García presented on the topic of “On Convergent Research: An Interdisciplinary Look at the Purpose of the Dialogue of Knowledge and the COVID-19 Pandemic.”

■ Media and Communication Center Hosts Seminar
HUFS Media and Communication Center subsidiary HUFS Center on Media Diplomacy (H.CMD, Selected as 2019 NRF Humanities and Social Science Research Center) held a seminar on the topic of “Korea’s Media Diplomacy Current Affairs and Tasks” at the Press Club of the Korea Press Foundation in Nov. 2020.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the seminar was simultaneously broadcast online and provided an opportunity to search the meaning and importance of media diplomacy and find ways to improve it. Up to now, media was considered as tool for political and diplomatic means, but the seminar searched for the need and possibility of media as part of public diplomacy and an academic principle that could stand on its own.

■ HK+ Project Team of the Institute of Indian Studies Holds 15th Humanities Week Event
HK+ Project Team of the Institute of Indian Studies (Director Kim Chan-wan) Gandhi Ashram Regional Humanities Center held an India Humanities Week Event from Oct. 26 to Oct. 29.

As part of the 15th Humanities Week Event hosted by the National Research Foundation of Korea, the event featured online and offline programs about “Gandhi Poems and Picture: Essay Contest Ceremony,” “150th Anniversary of the Birth of Gandhi Special Lecture,” “Ambedkar Special Lecture,” “Swami Vivekananda Special Lecture,” and “Turn off the Prejudice Switch Interview Showing.”

■ Division of Korean as a Foreign Language Hosts Korean Penmanship Contest for Foreigners Ceremony
HUFS Division of Korean as a Foreign Language (KFL, Dean Heo Yong) held a ceremony at the KFL Dean’s office for the “21nd Korean Penmanship Contest for Foreigners” hosted by King Sejong Memorial Foundation for the Hangeul Day.

The contest promotes the true meaning of Hangeul creation by King Sejong for foreign students, workers, employees, and families and helps in understanding of the unique and scientific texts of Hangeul. Due to COVID-19 concerns, the event was held online.

■ Emerging Economies Research Project Team of the Institute of Central Asia Studies Holds Online Company Presentation
HUFS Emerging Economies Research Project Team of the Institute of Central Asia Studies (Director Oh Jong-jin) co-hosted an online company presentation at the Yunus Emre Turkish Cultural Institute with the Industrial Bank of Korea (IBK) on the topic of “Turkey and Uzbekistan Economy and Market Outlook after COVID-19.”

The event was prepared together by HUFS Emerging Economies Research Project Team of the Institute of Central Asia Studies and IBK’s Foreign Exchange Business Department and sponsored by the Yunus Emre Turkish Cultural Institute, the Turkish Investment Office, and the Korea Research Foundation.

■ Polar Research Center Holds Academic Conference
HUFS Polar Research Center (Director Choi Woo-ik) held an academic conference titled “2020 HUFS Polar Research Center Conference” at the Songdo International Education Center in Oct. 2020.

The conference was co-hosted with the Institute of Russian Studies, Institute of Latin American Studies, and Institute of EU Studies on the topic of “Global Polar Research Current Affairs and Outlook” to examine the humanities and social science issues related to the South Pole and North Pole regions. Through the conference, a variety of topics based on humanities and social science relating to the South Pole and North Pole came together and provided new research insights.

■ Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence and Institute of EU Studies Invite Estonian Representative for Special Seminar
HUFS Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence (Director Kim Si-hong) and Institute of EU Studies (Director Kim Bong-chul) invited Estonian Ambassador Representative Marti Mätas (Chargé d'Affaires) for a special seminar on the topic of “Estonia, EU, and Korea” at the Matthew D. Lee Conference Room of the Main Building on the Seoul Campus.

At the seminar, the development story of Estonia’s fame as a digital powerhouse was shared and discussions followed on ways to strengthen the ties between Estonia and Korea.

■ Institute of Russian Studies Receives Merit Medal from the Russian Government
HUFS Institute of Russian Studies (Director Pyo Sang-yong) HK Research Professor Kim Joon-suk received a merit medal from the Russian government at the Russian Embassy to Korea in Oct. 2020.

The medal is awarded to those who contribute to Russian academics and culture overseas. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs selects the recipients and Prof. Kim received the medal for his years of works for the National Undergraduate Russian Debate and Russian language and literature education.
