HUFS signed MOUs with Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd., Korea Investment & Securities Co., Ltd., and ZINOL D&C Co., Ltd. for development plans of the Songdo Campus, totaling 300 billion won, which will serve as an innovative data science-based campus with industry-academia ties. The signing took place on Nov. 20 at the Seoul Campus Main Building.
HUFS attracted 300 billion won in investments for the industry-academy innovative Songdo campus, with plans to build a data platform complex (240 billion won), research and lecture complex (30 billion won), and global standard dormitory (30 billion won). In particular, to match the Ministry of Education’s plan to nurture talents in the high-tech field, HUFS aims to create a department in high-tech (data-centered) to educate students in the 4th Industrial Revolution era by offering majors such as in AI and big data.
The industry-academia data platform campus will be a futuristic and innovative campus with data storage, processing, analysis, knowledge, extraction, and service educational facilities. The on-site companies’ infrastructure, workforce, and data center will serve as a foundation for university education, research, and job training, and portions of the industry-academia funds will be used for optimized data science education and research. The industry-academia data platform campus and data science-based education will help in creating a high-tech industrial cluster in the Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ).
HUFS President Kim In-chul said the project marks the start of university participation in the Digital New Deal innovation and that HUFS will make the Songdo campus a hub for educating high-tech experts. He also added that the MOUs will signal the start of a major industry-academia-research cooperation.
