■ Kwon Soon-Han (Spanish, entry class of ’63), CEO of SOYEE Products, makes a KRW 200 million donation for the advancement of HUFS

On March 28, 2022 (Monday), Kwon Soon-Han (Spanish, entry class of ’63), CEO of SOYEE Products, donated KRW 200 million to the HUFS Development Fund. CEO Kwon, who has shown his deep affection to his alma mater by serving as the 28th, 29th, and 30th HUFS Alumni Association President, made another contribution to HUFS out of his wish for its development and advancement.

Having established SOYEE Products in 1983, he has grown the business into a manufacturing and trading company with an unparalleled technological capacity in the field of radiation and medical devices, contributing significantly to the nation’s export market expansion. He has also served as Vice President of Korea International Trade Association and President of Korea Importers Association. For his remarkable contribution to promoting trade and cross-border trade and cooperation in the private diplomacy sector as a trader and businessman, he has received the Order of Merit from the Taiwanese Minister of Economic Affairs, the Knighthood Order of Merit from the Italian government, and the Order of Industrial Merit from the Romanian government. Now serving as an honorary consul of South Korea to Costa Rica, he is fostering economic and cultural exchanges between the two nations. In recognition of his tremendous contributions, HUFS awarded him an honorary doctorate in Business Administration last December.

CEO Kwon commented, “I have been able to contribute to our nation’s development throughout my career as a trader and businessman all because HUFS helped me grow and sharpen essential skills in international business and management in my 20s. I hope this donation will help HUFS nurture globally competitive talents and foster the spirit of sharing among HUFS alumni.” With the donation, his cumulative donation amount has reached KRW 1.261 billion.

■ HUFS Department of International Finance holds the 2022 APEX Scholarship award ceremony

The HUFS Department of International Finance (Chair Kim Yong-Sik) held the 2022 Department of International Finance’s APEX Scholarship award ceremony on March 29, 2022 (Tuesday).

The APEX scholarships were awarded to student Ahn Seong-Wook (International Finance, entry class of ’18) and seven other students for their excellent academic performance and contribution to the development of the department.

Funded by the donation of Adjunct Professor Jang Eun-Gap of the department, who is the founder and CEO of logistics solution provider Asia Pacific Express Corporation (APEX), the annual scholarships are being launched in 2022 to recognize International Finance students who have demonstrated academic excellence and made notable contributions to the advancement of the department.

■ Emeritus Professor Moon Mi-Seon (German Education, entry class of ’72) of Seoul Women’s University donates the MOONOE Scholarship

On March 11, 2022 (Friday), Emeritus Professor Moon Mi-Seon (German Education, entry class of ’72) of Seoul Women’s University made a KRW 10 million scholarship donation.

Professor Moon said of her donation in her visit to HUFS, “I hope that this small donation could help HUFS students explore their future in this difficult time of the COVID-19 pandemic and bring attention and support from more HUFS alumni for the development of HUFS and HUFS students.” During her visit, she also made various suggestions, including encouraging HUFS alumni to build upon her donation to create the “10 Million Club”, in which 1,000 alumni follow her in donating KRW 10 million each to raise KRW 10 billion for their alma mater.

The MOONOE Scholarship is named after her family name “Moon” and “OE”, the first Korean syllable of HUFS. Having graduated from the HUFS Department of German Education, Professor Moon studied at Universität Hamburg and Universität des Saarlandesin in Germany before earning her master's degree and doctorate degree at the University of Michigan. After coming back to Korea, she served as President of the Korean Society for German Linguistics, President of the Korean Society of German Language and Literature, and a professor in the Department of German Language and Literature of Seoul Women’s University.

■ HUFS Department of Arabic Interpretation and Translation holds the Friendship Scholarship award ceremony

The HUFS Department of Arabic Interpretation and Translation (Chair Kim Soo-Wan) held the Department of Arabic Interpretation and Translation’s Friendship Scholarship award ceremony on March 3, 2022 (Thursday).

The scholarships were awarded to students Lee Yoo-Jin (entry class of ’18) and Kim Min-Soo (entry class of ’20) for their outstanding accomplishments in academic activities and contributions to the department.

Established in 1979 with the opening of the department, the Friendship Scholarship has raised around KRW 100 million in scholarship funds. As the full amount is now donated to HUFS, HUFS annually selects and awards scholarships to students of the department to honor the Friendship Scholarship’s founding philosophy of “helping students who show academic excellence and make significant contributions to the department.”

■ HUFS Division of International Studies delivers the Professor Kim Bong-Chul Scholarship for the 2022 spring semester

The HUFS Division of International Studies (Chair Lee Seung-Rae) held the 2022 Spring Semester Professor Kim Bong-Chul Scholarship award ceremony on March 7, 2022 (Monday). At the award ceremony, scholarships were awarded to students Kim Ji-Yoon (International Studies, entry class of ’18) and Song Ye-Jin (International Studies, entry class of ’18).

Funded by KRW 100 million donated by Professor Kim Bong-Chul of the same department, the Professor Kim Bong-Chul Scholarship recognizes excellent students pursuing International Studies each semester.

■ HUFS holds the Chungwoodang Scholarship award ceremony

The Alumni Scholarship Foundation run by the HUFS Alumni Association (President Yang In-Jib) held the Chungwoodang Scholarship award ceremony at the Onycom building on March 3, 2022 (Thursday). On January 10, 2022 (Monday), Onycom, which is led by President Yang, the 33rd President of the HUFS Alumni Association, pledged to donate KRW 10 million each year for 10 years from this year to the scholarship foundation to cultivate global talents by offering overseas study programs based on the HUFS alumni network.

Named after the donor’s pen name ‘Chungwoodang (淸雨堂)’, the Chungwoodang Scholarship represents his wish to give young HUFS students the opportunity to develop global perspectives in line with the HUFS slogan “Come to HUFS, Meet the World”. President Yang stated, “With the 10-year donation pledge, I would like to help HUFS better perform better in the college evaluation over the next 10 years. It will be really rewarding if the Chungwoodang Scholarship can invite more scholarship donors.”

Student Ham Ji-Hoon, who is the first beneficiary of the Chungwoodang Scholarship, which will be one of the leading scholarships available to HUFS students, said in his remarks, “I will leverage this scholarship to make my life goal of visiting 100 nations and learning six foreign languages come true. As the first winner of the Chungwoodang Scholarship, I will do my best to improve its reputation and raise awareness.”
