HUFS Center for Critical Foreign Languages Education (CFLE, Director Lee Eun-Gu) provided free translation services in critical foreign languages for the opening video clip of the International Conference on Women’s Rights and Peace 2021. The event was held on August 14, 2021 (Sunday), the day designated by the Korean government as a “Day of Commemoration” to raise public awareness on the “comfort women” issue at home and abroad and help restore the female victims’ dignity and reputations. HUFS CFLE’s translation donation came after discussions with the Research Institute of Japanese Military Sexual Slavery of the Women’s Human Rights Institute of Korea to help foreigners living in Korea and abroad better understand the “comfort women” issue.

The translations were completed by 33 HUFS students from the Department of Portuguese, Department of Thai, Department of Hindi, Department of Persian, Department of Mongolian, Department of Polish, and Department of Hungarian. Their translations were proofread by HUFS faculty members, including native speaking instructors and professors. The translations in these seven critical foreign languages are now available on the official webpage of Archive 814 (https://www.archive814.or.kr).
